INFERGEN® (Interferon alfacon-1): a different kind of interferon

Use the handy checklist of key points to help your patients make a successful new start on INFERGEN therapy.
INFERGEN is a unique consensus interferon with demonstrated safety and tolerability. In clinical trials, most adverse events were mild to moderate in severity and abated with cessation of therapy.1 Flu-like symptoms (i.e., headache, fatigue, fever, rigors, myalgia, sweating, body pain, nausea, and athralgia) were the most frequently reported treatment-related adverse events and were treated symptomatically.1

Managing side effects

Consider the following to help your patients comply with INFERGEN therapy:

As the most common side effects of INFERGEN therapy are flu-like symptoms (headache, fatigue, muscle pain, and stiffness), patients should be advised:
  • That most of these symptoms will become less severe over time as they continue their therapy.
  • To take Tylenol® or a similar over-the-counter analgesic medication a half hour before injecting to relieve uncomfortable symptoms.
  • To take INFERGEN at bedtime to help reduce symptom severity.
  • To drink plenty of water ¡X 8 to 10 glasses daily.
  • To avoid alcohol and caffeine.
Be certain your patients have the help they need to manage any side effects with their INFERGEN therapy. In addition to enrolling them in INFERGEN AspireSM, print copies of this helpful guide: Managing Interferon Side Effects.
