How does INFERGEN® (Interferon alfacon-1) work?

See how INFERGEN works: watch a short video.
No one knows exactly how INFERGEN and other interferons work. But research shows that interferon:1,2
  • Helps your immune system fight infections caused by viruses, like HCV
  • Slows down or stops the growth of your HCV levels
  • Helps stop the virus from damaging your liver
INFERGEN is known as a bioengineered interferon with a unique sequence of DNA building blocks.3 That means scientists took parts of other interferons and combined them to make INFERGEN.

While INFERGEN is similar to other interferons, it is also a different kind of interferon.4

In the research lab, INFERGEN has been shown to possess a much greater ability to bind to the type-1 receptor for HCV than other interferons.*5,6

In the lab, INFERGEN has also been shown to:
  • Slow down the ability of HCV to multiply
  • Increase the immune system's ability to fight HCV*3
* The relationship between the way interferons work in the lab and the way they work in the body is unknown.
